“That’s the beauty of the Waikato Women’s Fund — one day you might be the one receiving support, and the next you’re in a position to give it.”
Melissa brings lived experience, fierce determination, and deep compassion to her role as one of the co-founders of Te Ira Wāhine o Waikato – the Waikato Women’s Fund.
She became a single mum at 19, while studying law and political science — an experience that taught her strength, resilience, and the power of backing yourself. With the support of her whānau and her own grit, she returned to law school, completed her degrees, and began building a life grounded in purpose and contribution.
“I experienced the world in a whole new way. I saw how powerful a support network can be — and how important it is to have people who believe in you.”
Now a mum of three, Melissa is passionate about making sure every wāhine in the Waikato has the opportunity to thrive. She helped launch the Fund in 2018, and in 2025, she’s stepped back in to help guide its next chapter.
“I give because I believe in the ripple effect of collective giving — your bit, my bit, every bit counts. It’s a way for all of us to uplift others, no matter where we’re starting from.”
This Fund isn’t just about generosity — it’s about equity, manaakitanga, and building a future where all women and girls can flourish.
